Ann Arbor Theater Vixen: Jenn McKee's Blog

{July 10, 2009}   Summertime theater lull? Go to Canada!

With only a couple of shows still playing in these dog days of the summer – “A Picasso” finishes its extended run at Performance Network this weekend, and “Wake” continues for a while yet at the Purple Rose – and the Art Fair about to land on us with the subtlety of Godzilla’s foot, my thoughts have now turned to a theater trip to Canada. Because I’ll confess that a trip to Niagara on the Lake, to see plays at The Shaw Festival, is just about one of my favorite getaways of all time. The second we arrive in the gorgeous, impossibly quaint Ontario town – after about a 5-6 hour drive – I feel instantly relaxed, and I stay that way throughout the trip.

This year, my in-laws have generously agreed to accompany us and play nanny for Lily while Joe and I see some shows, bike to the Falls and local wineries, etc. (NOTL’s best wine offerings, in my opinion, are Rieslings and Roses. I normally detest the pinks, but a couple vineyards up there make Roses that are subtle, lightly sweet, wonderful summer wines.) Though we’ll only have time to see two shows this trip – O’Neill’s “A Moon for the Misbegotten” and Garson Kanin’s classic, “Born Yesterday” – we can’t wait.

Because, you know, we never get to see any live theater. 🙂
